Betrayed! I'm feeling so... well, not really.

The movie of The Producers is hard to hate without having a complete sense of humour failure, but it's not very good. Spotty to say the least, drastically outstays its welcome, and most of it just sits there gurning at you. Lane yes, Broderick no, Uma not really, Ferrell... Ah, Ferrell. That Golden Globe nod wasn't just abject starfucking then. He steals the movie right from under Lane's nose, and, to be honest, he's welcome to it. C

Not to trawl in superficial comparisons, but has Rent made it to your shores yet? I thought the spirit of the show transferred beautifully, even when some of the set-ups and tonal decisions didn't, and I admit to harboring a hope that you'll like it....

Not sure when it's out here, and I'm actually totally unfamiliar with the show, except for that Team America spoof, which kind of cracked me up. But it sounds like my kind of thing; I tend to like my musicals with heart very much on sleeve, as you might guess from my fondness for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg!

Looking forward to catching New York, New York, one of your faves I know, over the Christmas hols - I've only ever seen it piecemeal, but I really loved what I saw.

I wasn't familiar with the show, either, which kind of gives the lie to my comment—I think what I meant is that even just watching the movie, you can tell that it's a contagiously sincere and heart-full thing... having never seen the show, I instantly felt weirdly familiar with it.
